There once was an advanced civilization with one habitable planet in a system near Orion's Belt known as Ko'Taia. This civilization had reached far enough in their development to have just achieved harnessing the unlimited power of their sun through technology, having proceeded to end scarcity of food or hospitable living conditions among their citizens and ushering in a new utopian age of progress. At some point in their history, they started a project to preserve their culture and legacy should a catastrophe lead their civilization to ruin. They had prepared a collection of mighty champions who would be able to escape any possible disaster that could befall the system. This project brought serenity to the Ko'Tai, knowing that no matter what happened their light would continue to shine in the galaxy.
But when the day came that catastrophe arrived in the form of a hostile empire, everything wrong that could happen, went wrong. A dimensional weapon beyond their wildest imaginations blindsided all their best-laid plans. In the end, no champion was able to escape the system's destruction. By a cruel twist of bad luck, one lowly technician of no importance ended up on the last surviving Ko'Taian cruiser that shot into deep space.
Nearly four hundred years in cryosleep, Tio'Naia Mii'Ke was finally found by the local Deca-Solar Alliance and placed immediately under galactic federal protection as an endangered species. Tio'Naia has been granted many amenities and allowances as is Deca-Solar Alliance standard, but no amount of comforts are enough to drown out the guilt they carry in their heart every day since the Ko'Taian Catastrophe.
Tio'Naia (Tio to their friends) is intelligent but brash. They have no regard for authority when it comes to following rules they believe make no sense or are not up to their Ko'Taian standards of ethics (Food, which was free for all Ko'Tai growing up, is a particular sticking point for them among certain civilizations. Many concepts of private property are also alien and nonsensical to them and some consider them a bit of a thief). They sometimes see themselves as a civilized person among cavepeople, and must sometimes learn the hard way that others may be just as wise if not wiser than them. Having come from a civilization that had killed all of its gods and took command of its world's order through invention, Tio'Naia is often dismissive of the mystical and of deities (whom are referred to by them as Entropy Controlling Intelligences, ECI's). They will always be the last person to believe in ghosts, and the first to offer a scientific explanation for a phenomenon.
Their most prized possession is their smartsuit, which they rarely remove. The suit has an inordinate array of functions, not just as armor or temperature regulation, or radiation protection; the suit can also provide nutrients and oxygen to survive longer without food or water, can clean its wearer, and interface with most electronic devices. It is the last piece of Ko'Tai technology that functions, making it important to Tio'Naia on multiple levels.
Though they put on a brave front, they are lonely and touch-starved. They will often throw themselves into flings, just to quickly end them soon after for fear of falling into a deep connection (already perilous, because of their psychic empathic abilities they can quickly come to mental and emotional accordance with someone they have gotten close to). They are self-conscious of the way their skin generates bioluminescent pulses like cephalopods when in contact and connecting with others.
They have been told by others that it is their duty to revive their people's culture and society by whatever means possible, anywhere from education programs to genetic cloning. They have elected to put all such thoughts in the furthest back end of their mind as they distract themselves with surviving in the strange world they have woken up in.
