Overall
Jon has an eccentric personality, almost unsettling with how enthusiastic he gets about certain topics. Space, physics, and the supernatural are all things that he'll nerd out about at the drop of a hat, dropping his normal "proper" manner of speech for lightspeed rambling; he'll gladly talk about nearly any topic other than himself. His wanderlust and need for constant "new" mean he doesn't stay put very long, which works for his investigative journalism hobby; he could very much make a career out of the things he uncovers, but for some reason, he usually just keeps it to himself.
He's currently daylighting as a librarian, which gives him a decent perch from which to observe other people, and easy access to information. Being a librarian doesn't exactly pay enough to support his travel-extensive lifestyle, and is perfectly willing to sell information without putting much thought into who's asking or why they need it. He applies this sort of approach to interpersonal relationships, and uses a facade of awkward cluelessness and helpfulness to get people comfortable enough around him to use as social (or literal) meatshields. Since most encounters with other people never cross into these sorts of dramatics, most people he meets tend to think he's just a sort of goofy, awkward nerd, and not the self-centered, manipulative monster he actually is. Plus, he's funny and helpful to most people, so even less reason to suspect he's morally bankrupt. It doesn't help that most emotions he feels are shallow or hollow and almost closer to analyzing statistics than actually feeling something. Alliances are convenient. Dying to protect a secret is not. Continuing to learn is important. Standard, uninteresting humans are not. There will always be more to observe.
Sometimes he starts talking about absolute nonsense with complete smug conviction, especially when he's stressed or in danger, and he's not even sure why he does this. His relationship with reality is loose, and feels like he's remembering things that never happened during these episodes. The only thing that comes of this is he's extremely, frustratingly lucky during and for a time both before and afterwards. Depending on the situation, he'll either play it off via some line about coping through humor, or he'll play it up as suffering from some sort of disorder. Really depends on if his current company seem more susceptible to goofy bravado or sympathy. Either way, he's not really sure how he feels about it, but it fuels a lot of his interests and near-compulsion to learn.
