This looks and feels like a comic I'd pick up at a random indie comic shop in some forgotten corner of Seattle. Where I'd start reading it and immediately get an impression of a character you just heard of but you nonetheless wonder "wait a second why HAVEN'T I heard of them yet?" Just an immediately charming introduction to Pinn as a character, what her struggles are, who she is and what her role in the community is and why she's so well-liked. There's slime dudes and vampires and a chicken guy with a bad mother clucker shirt and yet it's just a bar. It's just a normal bar that just so happens to have a vampire behind it.
The colors the layout the actual expressions and the nice contained story all come together to make a really delightful vibe. About the only thing I have issue with is the lettering with some of the normal dialogue, and they only really stand out because of how well everything else comes together. The hand-lettered yelling from Pinn and our Belligerent Beastly Barpatron is meanwhile perfect and brings across the volume really well.
All in all just a stellar job.
If only I had more than seventy five words to talk about how much I like this comic. I'm elated, ecstatic, enamored, enthralled, encredibeld at Pinn finally getting her intro out for the world to see. Pinn is super cool. I dig her vibe. I like Earl and cyclops baddie as part of the cast of regulars that chill at the best worst dive bar in town. I await what new stories you have for Pinn in the future. My only critique is that I need more Pinn. Like now. Great job Inky!
This is a fantastic comic. Straightforward introduction and it really gave a good understanding as to who Pinn is and what she is about. While this isn't anything crazy in-depth with what the story is doing, there is a lot of promise for more to come with her. Hopefully scheduling and life will make that wait not too long.
You've got a great handle on everything but there's a few critiques and they're going to be a little in-depth and specific since you're already exceedingly solid in what you create. Specifically towards the one or two instances of perspective and size inconsistencies with the characters, such as when Pinn is carrying the Future Greaser and the very last Pinn that sort of stand out. That panel where the Greaser is being carried feels a little cramped - you probably should have stepped back to see the full picture and evaluate it from there. You probably notice them, but due diligence has me wanting to make sure.
The other thing that stood out was that the choice of color for your shadows weren't the most appropriate. That blue works great if you're outside on a sunny day, but inside of a dimly lit bar you would want heavier shadows or ones that would skew towards a dimmer palette in general. Especially with how red the interior is! The other part is that your bricks having that lighter tone for it's outline is a bit noticeable since you've got solid black cracks there. You probably should have stuck with the outlines there being black as well or done some lighter colors for the backgrounds. Either way it stands out a little bit, even though I'm sure you did that to make it so it didn't stand out. It's tricky, figuring out that balance.
With all that stuff out of the way, your posing is looking really nice. Pinn specifically is just oozing a lot of confidence in the way you're drawing her and she feels really good here. Your background details are looking super good and you really made The Threshold a character as well with how you drew and designed it. Clearly, anyone who does stuff with Pinn in the future will have an excellent roadmap with how the bar looks in the future. Your little fight sequence was handled very nicely and it showed a real stepping out of comfort zone for you, again - very nicely handled.
A fantastic comic, really excited to see you do more with her. Great work!
Welcome Pinn! It's so great to see not only the introduction of this character, but also getting a little slice of her world, not to mention a totally different style and vibe by way of comic coming from you. It's clear you have such a comfortable handle on how to tell a reader "this is the character and what they do" in such a frugal way. The Threshold bar has such personality and character that feels very reflective of her. No fluff, or anything ostentatious ,but just a cozy little hole in the wall dive. I also appreciate that the patrons couldn't be more eclectic as opposed to just regular people. To say nothing of how easily you established relationships with the regulars of this bar-kind of adore the sludge monster has such a mundane name lol
This is the kind of comic that'd you'd totally see at an indie con and want to learn so much more about. I certainly can't wait for more Pinn
I'm so glad to see Pinn's debut! She's looking great so far, and the Itami Saitou shoutout is great!!! The bar setting is a great jumping off point, and I'm honestly curious on where else Pinn's adventures and shenanigans can go. She seems to be that one bartender who's seen it all and can give as good as she can take. I'm curious to see what other environments she could interact in and what kind of characters could bounce off her. Keep it up and I'd like to do a comic with Pinn at some point too!
I fell in love with Pinn the moment I saw her design and this comic just made me love her even more. The vibrant colors were beautiful, but what really impressed me was how cohesive and intentional the color scheme felt as it tied everything together so well. The atmosphere pulled me right into that dive bar setting. I also really appreciated the wide cast of characters and that they weren’t just background fillers. Pinn’s no-nonsense attitude is so cool to see. This intro gave us a solid glimpse of what she is like but honestly, it wasn’t enough. I’m left wanting more of her in the best way possible!
This is some crazy good art and a well written intro to boot! We get to see a lot about Pinn's character but I still feel like we haven't seen all there is to her just yet which makes me want to know more about her. I'll also admit I love bartender characters especially in places like Oculama as it's really fun to have a character that comes packaged with a well established location. I'm gonna make sure I remember this character because I'd really love to battle her! I especially love the variety your panels have. You're clearly not afraid of pulling back to show the whole room and that's a blessing I wish I had!
