I was surprised to see such a muted color scheme in your comic this round, after how vibrant your past entries have been, but the use of color here is still phenomenal; the touches of red for the blood and strings - the brightness of the fire to punctuate the darkness of the night scene - all wonderful. I think the panel-to-panel transitions in the front half of the comic could be a little smoother, but that's more a comment on what might improve with a longer comic-writing window than a critique of this current one - the story moves very clearly and through a lot of beats - impressively so given the writing time everyone had. The gags, if it even needs be said, are standout as always. Tembel is an airhead delight, of course, the womb-punch is awful and hilarious in equal measure, and Hamsa's ultimate downfall has that perfect Merry Melodies-style karma to it that reads funny and awesome at the same time.
(One quick aside - who was it in that tomb on the second page?)
Right out the gate: very slick use of the previous round's outcome to set the stage for your newest one: part serendipity, but also well executed (pun intended) on your part. The fight, though short, is well choreographed, and laid out in a very appealing style. The stained glass layout was a great idea, and I think the execution mostly works, though the order of reading for page 2 is slightly difficult to suss out at first glance; not so much that it hinders the story, but maybe just enough to ponder more visual cues for the reader if you pull of something similar in the future. A really strong work, also, for being effectively two pages (not that the title page wasn't also great). A full and proper fight, and a great deathmatch.
Your title card reference gave me a real good giggle, thank you for that.
I also just loved loved using the stain glass window/ Chapel format for doing your panels, I thought that was so clever.
My only real critique that springs to mind is with that second page due to the stain glass layout, it was a little clunky initially for the flow. Where my eyes needed to go next and hop back up to the middle of the page. But that's pretty minor over all.
It was a very fun read and I think you did a real nice job!
Fantastic Job again dude. There's a lot to really love about this comic!
I really like the use of a limited color palette this round. I think you used it very effectively, to establish the story was happening in the night. Really great action and your visual gags in the background got me pretty good the second time reading. I didn't catch a few of them the first time round! Also that page 6 holy heck was not expecting that!
Any critique I have feels like it would be kinda nitpicky, I think you did a really great job on this one again. Well done!!!
Oh wow this is such a creative format for your comic. The big ole stained glass church window storytelling is super inventive and fits the two characters thematically really well. While super creative though it does have a few issues, I wasn't fully sure at first how I was supposed to read the panels, and without any help with like speech bubbles guiding my eye it wasn't the easiest to see at first. On top of that I'm not really sure where the other Hamsa came from on the second page, didn't really get that and I still don't really understand. Really loved your art though, the hatching that is put on Hamsa is really nice and lets them pop all throughout the comic, espcially on the second page, every time you draw them they look amazing. Really love the 3rd last panel and how they look so puppet like, you know the kill is coming and its spooky. Great job
I hate you so much hahahahaha, there were things that I thought I would never see in this world, ideas that I would never even consider as something that would cross someone elses mind, but here you are doing exactly that. The audible shock and fit of laughter I had after seeing Hamsa punch a baby out of a pregnant woman!!!! I can't, its so cursed and so god damn funny. I literally had people read this comic just so I could see their reaction to that. You are a mad scientist a fucking comedy genius. This is probably the most I've ever laughed at a comic and just had so much joy from it amazing job here really funny. While not a huge thing I think you could've had like an extra tone that was lighter than what the lightest you had was, the comic was still super readable and not having it didnt take anything away but it wouldve added a little it more and wouldve given the comic some more pop to it. Amazing job though
Your art is insane; it's simply astounding how much detail you can cram in such tight spaces and mind boggling how long it must take. I mean didn't even know that Boatman was in there until it was pointed out in the Discord. The layout is creative and fitting and I love how you still went off Don's victory comic where Hamsa was burning and induced even more continuity with Boatman's presence. It's a very straightforward comic based off an interesting premise, which is not a bad thing, but I feel the ending was lacking (assuming this was the finished version) I believe it leaves a bit too much up to the imagination.
Color me surprised it's the second comic I read in this tournament containing a child death, and I'm all for it.
Whatever I could've critiqued about your Mackkenzie comic is simply not there in this comic, it's an enjoyable read from start to finish that I could totally imagine reading in print. The art is brilliant, the setting is brilliant (I did not realize how much fun a bunch of vaguely oriental monks can bring to the table) and the baby's synergy with Tembel is top tier.
I've got absolutely nothing to nitpick about this comic, and if I were to praise it for all it is I wouldn't be done by the time the deadline rolls around.
There are a lot of cool ideas in this comic but I feel it misses a lot of opportunities for showing a fight between faiths and even what started this battle in the first place, I do like a lot of the shots here and the inspiration with things like God and Adam reaching out to each other. I love the ideas like the stained glass page layouts I dont feel really worked they kinda ruined the flow for me of reading the action and I feel the concept of stained glass really needs color to fully come through in the translations. Over all decent action but the creativity may have worked against you.
There were some really fun parts to this comic I like that it was a chase scene and solved without a real fight and feels like a good dynamic of your own character being a a pacifist in a way is really neat to see. I do felt some of the action felt a little against the grain of flow but you did a great job of using the negative space of your comic gutters over all this was a really fun comic to see but felt very inconsequential for your character meeting what could be another servant of another god and what that means as a servant of his own, but I guess its fine just being a scooby doo style chase with some dark humor for good measure just wish there was a bit more.
Nice Always Sunny title card reference. The attempt at stained glass layouts was ambitious but sadly I don't think it worked very well in the end. Sometimes concepts and execution just don't end up agreeing. The first page in particular is a little rough with it requiring a scroll back up to continue reading the rest of it. Another shade to the grayscale might've helped some panels with clarity but most of them work out with no issue. I'm a little sad that while technically yes, whatever altercation that took place can be called over, there feels as if there is no real resolution. I also don't understand why there is suddenly another puppet but that is something that can be overlooked a little more when it comes to divine nonsense. Not always though, so that's something to watch out for next time.
A simple story that turns out good in the end. Surprised the baby made it. The amount of jokes didn't necessarily distract from the plot but more like, the jokes were so rapid fire that they distracted from themselves. It became an overall chuckle rather than a good laugh at any one thing. Hamsa's expressions are more memorable than them in the end. Art wise, keep an eye out for tangents especially with things like speech bubble tails and characters. There were several that drew my eye to the wrong spots, not for very long but noticeably enough. The sounds effects are okay, but at the same time feel a little rough. Maybe font or more dynamic placement might help that.
First, I love seeing hamsa all burnt up presumably from the last comic fight. I also loved seeing Tembel all sad like a kicked puppy presumably from HIS last comic's resolution haha. I also LOVED the stained glass window motif! really creative way to do paneling! My one complaint is that I had a hard time figuring out what order to read panels in at times, since the stained glass would have multiple vertical columns. Also the narrowness of the panels made it hard to set the scenery/backgrounds, so it was hard for me to place the character's locations between panels. I did really like the ending with tembel reciting a prayer as hamsa closes in, so that was cool~
This comic was super fun to read! So many things happened, and the comedic amounts of gore were delightful. I loved the gags like brother greg's porn stash and the baby being punched out of his mother's stomach. That killed me as well as her. I did find some plot elements to be a bit hard to follow- at first I didn't realize the woman's husband was beheaded and kind of being held by hamsa because hamsa was all tangled up and I couldn't exactly read the sillouette or tell what limbs were whose. Other than that, I was largely able to follow as the story progressed, and I really loved the ending. Very clever use of the character's limitations and abilities!
Mavell - First off, the "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" style title really gave me a chuckle. You got the font and even the screen aspect ratio down and everything hahaha. Love it! Very creative use of paneling! Esp sticking to the stained-glass style windows commonly seen in churches to stay on theme. It does have its drawbacks though as I had a hard time following the order sequence of events at least at first glance. Your linework has a very traditional/newspaper-like quality to it which I adore. Overall this is a straightforward get down to business fight scene between the characters which checks all the boxes for me. And although we did not really see the kill shot, it's very heavily implied on how this ended and I think not showing it is far more effective in this case.
Brentony - Well damn!! You really made Hamsa so utterly terrifying. I could hear the clacking of his puppet pieces echoing in these dark empty hallways of the temple as he chased down Tembel and the lady. Each page had me anticipating what would happen in the next. Although I wish I knew why this couple was being chased (or maybe it was implied and I just did not catch it), it did not detract from the enjoyment of this entry. I have been invested in the story from page 1 and things got better and better from there. Tembel's entrance will never cease to amuse me and how he just scares the f out of everyone for popping out in random places. Tembel and the baby sharing expressions is downright adorable lol. I didn't know whether to say 'aww' or be terrified these two innocent looking creatures being chased down relentlessly by a murder puppet. The events that led to the kill scene was really clever and well done! Also love the Boat Man cameo!
This is a delightfully unique comic that feels super appropriate to both characters' central concepts. I love both your rounds' commitment to continuity, with Hamsa here being burnt to death and meeting Tembel in Heaven. It's really nice seeing a more polished comic from you, I do feel like your art style comes through much more strongly than in the previous round with some wonderfully dynamic camera angles and flashy effects. The spot colors are also applied with a beautifully light touch that brings out the characters nicely.
On one hand I like the "off-screen" nature of the death blow here, but on the other I am slightly left wanting for some more resolution. Either way this is a fun clash between the characters. Obviously I also have to mention the stained glass format, which is super unique and clever and definitely will be stuck in my mind for a while.
Another scrumptiously gory escapade from Tembel! This was so excellent, you're really hitting it out of the park with these. The art is beautiful, the pacing is excellent, your comedic timing is unbelievable! You mentioned my round being ambitious but damn this is 10 full(ish) color pages haha. I would say that you could probably cut it down, but since you finished and it's very well polished, you really don't need to. I think the extended NPC development does wonders for making Tembel and Hamsa feel like they exist in a broader world, plus their deaths are hilariously juicy. I'm a big fan of the "fully develop a character then abruptly kill them off" gag, it's always funny.
Also as I mentioned in MavelDuceau's review, I love the commitment to tying in your opponent's previous rounds. Overall an extremely fun comic that never fails to improve my mood every time I read it.
I am almost sure you're going to get this glowing review more than once, but it bears repeating- the paneling and composition concept you utilized into a grand stained glass window where the panes turned into your panels was an inspired idea. Not to mention big! It was nice to lean in and get a look at all the little details. Definitely a creative and clever idea that pays homage to your opponents celestial nature. If I had any notes it would be to mind your order of events. Readers tend to read left to right typically. This rule cant definitely be bent, but its also easy for your reader to get lost in the sauce when there's no definite direction
Interesting change on your palette going with a minimal and darker color scheme. I think it really drives home the nighttime spooky ooky themes we get into once our intrepid pair make their way to the temple. Your design of Hamsa is so cartoonishly squeaky. All the rounded corners and big toony eye really makes this big bad fit in, in Tembels world. It was neat to see the nod to your opponents storyline by including the background characters the last comic ended on. Its a testament to not only doing your research, but doffing your hat to the last rounds efforts.
Also OMG the gut punch baby delivery XDD What a hilariously grisly moneyshot! Your build up was so unexpected and ridiculous you couldn't help but laugh. Your comics are always a comedic romp. Keep bringing on the funny
