LOVE to see a comic where all the participants are just jamming and having a good time with each other. You've done a great job at finding an energy/ pace of events that feels like it suits all the OCs involved (no small feat when there are 4 in play), and remains very entertaining for the reader. The shift from desert sunlight to underground cavern provides a fun balance of settings without missing a beat in the dance-party energy of the overall comic.
My biggest frustration with the comic is that it leaves me with a lot of questions as it transitions from beat to beat; and those questions are distracting from following what story there is: what exactly is happening when Myrtle meets and joins with the others? Why is Kriss suddenly concerned about participating in what the underground wizard wants, and what is the purpose of that initial concern, which doesn't appear to crop up elsewhere in the comic? The individual beats are entertaining, but don't seem to add up to a coherent whole.
That said, the flow of events in the comic have the sort of charm and appeal that something like, say, a music video might have. It's FUN, and I think sometimes that's all a comic needs to be. So kudos on the fun ride, and props for going all-in on good vibes ;)
This was SO CUTE. Visually a home run - a hectic environment like a party is a big artistic challenge, so props for tackling it with full hearts. You've captured the chaos and noise of a comic in a purely visual medium, which is a sign of real skill! The sheer number of character designs and outfits in play here are a major treat, and I've gone back over these pages at least three times at this point just to look at how cool all the OCs look decked out to par-tay!
I think the flow of the comic gets in its own way at times in the comic. The portion where Myrtle is trying to get past the other wizards to get some of Kriss' attention feels like it drags on/ repeats beats in a way that arrests the momentum of the comic, without adding much to the overall story.
The use of Coach and Protein wizard is pretty deft, that said. They are obnoxious, but endearingly so. Loud and entertaining, and well-suited to the party atmosphere you've written into the comic. They are well-written obstacles for Myrtle to get past to Kriss, and the happy ending here feels sufficiently earned. REALLY looking forward to seeing more of Kriss herself in future comics, whether in this tournament or elsewhere :)
No Words can describe the indescribable, CARNAL feeling i get from this comic, i adore so much about this, this feels like a regular show episode, and its so, perfectly episodic?? if that makes sense, like it feels like such a perfect chunk of comic i dont even know what i can say other than gush but im trying. No fucking notes i cant even begin to describe how much i enjoy the little backstory, the setup of the Purple Hat Wizard Party, the fucking the fucking the fucking uh MEOW??? the fact that Krissy knows the Duo beforehand? aaahghghg Amazing.
No Words can describe the indescribable, CARNAL feeling I get from this comic, im itching in my veins from the fucking hilarious just, comedy of it all, there is no part of this that isnt joyous. there is no part of this that istt TJIFICKING FOWORK WITH ME DAMMIT isnt funny. everything just feels so, right, theyre friends of course they are, of course they FUCKING FLEX ALONE IN THE DESERT?? yeah, i just accept everything about this comic at face value, i cannot make a judgement, i refuse. I fucking refuse. Theres no better display of just, pure character, bravo.
i love how densely packed this wizard party feels! i know at a certain point the background establishing shots disappear, but on first read, i really felt that chaotic party vibe through the whole thing! lotta details, very fun. myrtle's emphatic and desperate crush on krissy is also super well conveyed, and she's an absolute cutie in this. i do think it's a little weird that your opponents only actually first appeared on page 7 of 11, and only really act as a brick wall for myrtle. i recognize that them being wizards is certainly what inspired the whole scenario, but in terms of what actually happens in the comic, they're very static, and i think that's unfortunate. besides that though, i do like their ceaseless posing in the panels they are present for! this is a super fun and energetic comic through and through.
so, this comic definitely some wonderful individual shots, but altogether, it doesn't really come together for me. i was tempted to say this comic makes no sense, but that's not true at all, the story's pretty simple to understand; it's just that it feels more like a music video than a comic. you've got this whole excuse plot for a fight, which is fine and fun (i'm not gonna be the person to ask to have my beautiful dancing justified), but the exposition is replete with so much unnecessary detail, and then the battle itself is two pages long and aborted. it has some momentum to it, but it also, despite the fighter reveal transition at the bottom of page 5, only involves one character from each team. coach wizard and krissy are hardly involved here!! and then the battle is also three compositional quotes of memes in a row and like, that's probably too many memes to compositionally quote at once. perhaps if the comic were just 7 pages of dancing, i'd feel a little better about it, because the dancing is great, and i cannot emphasize that enough. but in total it just feels confused!
The art in this one is to die for! Like oh man it's so good with the art style and the shading and the whole everything.
You had a good team here making a very well put together comic.
You also did a good job of turning a very simple scenario and putting a lot of heart as well as entertaiment into it. I also like how the conflect was less about a fight and more of Myrtle trying to get to hang out with Krissy while the wizard bros block her lol.
Again I really love Protein and Coach here! They are just so fun to play with!
I also really loved the world building and the ending was rather wholesome. I ship it lol!
I really enjoyed the art and the vibe this comic brings. It's very fun loving and doing it's own thing. I really liked the introductions you had with Coach and Protain wizard hanging out Krissy in the desert doing a work out.
I can not under state how much I feel Coach and Protain just match each others. They just work really well.
I do wish coach wizard had more things to say/ do. See more of the dymanic you have with Coach and Protin within this comic.
I also really loved the colours and interesting panels you had on display, it really added to the entertaining factor! It was a nice short comic and I would of loved more, I want to see more comic with these two wizard guys!
What a fun lil comic and a very sweet blossoming romance. Ive really enjoyed what youve been doing in the past with all the oculama wizards just being bros and they always seem to be hanging out at Big Wizards house, its funny its super sweet and makes oculama feel alot more alive than just being in random places completely alone. The only real thing that hurts the comic in my eyes is how you included your opponents. Cause like the comic is a really nice piece of the start of romance between two characters but I feel like we miss out on the your opponents because of how much focus is placed on Krissy and Myrtle. Like if you look at page 8, a page that is about coach wizards and protein wizards proposal to Krissy the focus isnt on them at all, instead it focuses on a joke, and while its a good joke and I laughed at it it also comes at the cost of showing your opponents. And its like you have a really good story and it would've really worked for me if we had actually seen the interaction between the two wizards and Krissy instead of having them be side characters to their own part of the story. And all the shift would be to just move the focus abit and show more of your opponents and show off the amazing outfits you put them in. Like I can't state this enough but god damn yalls artwork is out of this world, absolute wizards of linework and colouring. the comic is so wonderfully rendered and everyones lil costume changes are so spot on 80s I love it. Really great work on this, excited to see what yall create in the future if you move on.
alright alright pengogo and Budd, I'm super impressed with this comic for real. Its so funny how such a silly little comic like this is so well thought out, instead of like some huge big plot yall set out to do something very specific that you really dont get to see in most OCTs and you delivered on that. and its crazy because theres alot here that I would question in other comics that are more traditional and follow a more traditional plot and premise. Instead of asking well why are the lot of them walking through the desert I see that they just dancing, its an 80s music video in the form of a comic and it works so unbelievably well. In my opinion this is a comic that knows its own identity more than any other comic in this tournament right now, anyone who says this comic is confused and doesnt know what its doing is an idiot. But i do gotta ding ya for some things because its not a perfect comic, the dialogue that big ole cave wizard dude says aint always the easiest to read the hand drawn text aint easy on the eyes, Krissy's dialogue is easy to read so I know yall can do it you just gotta make sure all the dialogue is readable. And on the topic of Krissy she really just dissapears as im sure you know. I am a huge stickler for how you use your opponent in your comics it just sucks when a character just dissapears from the comic entirely like that, even more when she was such a fun addition to the starting little dance and realllllly sold home the 80s workout music video vibe you had going. Kinda sucks because I felt like with Krissy there for the second half you wouldve had a perfectly written comic. Cause god damn is this entertaining, such a fun time watching them dance and have their little fake fight and then just so secretly hidden away is this thought of is this ancient wizard a representation of us the reader? We the readers just toss characters together for that need for entertainment, we want to see these big ass power move fights and watching them scream out their big moves and kick the shit out of eachother but at the end they respect eachother and they still friends and we're screaming along with the wizard because this is what we want, all masked up as funny music video. Yall did phenomenal, honesly loved the fuck out of this
Eating this lineart. Eating it chewing it like spaghetti tasty good. fhjsjgkd Coach Wizard Ass. I love how Muscle Wizard is just a Big Shape in those panels. This is an adorable wizard exercise (jazzercise?) session. Uh oh. Everyone else confirmed to have an ass besides Myrtle. Schrodinger's ass, hidden by the hair. FUCK YEAH SPOT BLACKS U KNOW I LOVE SPOT BLACKS. CHEERING. WIZARD ORBITAL CANNON STRIKE ULTRA BEAM XTREME KILL. WIZARD FRIENDSHIP. I LOVE THIS FOR THEM. AND FOR UNDERGROUND RAISIN BODY HUGEBRAIN WIZARD (GREAT DESIGN). Y'ALL WERE ALREADY POWERFUL INDIVIDUALLY AND TOGETHER Y'ALL'RE EXTREMELY ULTRA KILL POWERFUL.
Shoving these delicious tasty colours in my mouth. This is a sick wizard rave with a palette to match. Rip that balloon typo. I can hear the sparkly sound effect through my eyeballs (complimentary). D'awww that's so cute, go for it Myrtle! I believe in you! FABULOUS PARTY OUTFITS. GLITTER INTENSIFIES. Sir she just got outta time prison maybe hold off the sales pitch, there's cassette tapes to listen to. NICE SHOT. HA DECOY SKIP-ITS. YESSSSSS IT WORKED OUT. This wizard rave fuckign SLAPS. Shoving the colours once again in my mouth and also the shapes and lineart hot damn.
This was so damn good, so zany, vivid, wholesome, full of charm - charm to the max!! Gorgeous colors, great gags left and right - I think its fair to say that Wizards basically rule Oculama. Myrtle's expressions are cute and very readable, people often underestimate how difficult it can be to write a wordless character, especially when everyone else can talk - you really have to make sure the script is very legible so there's no misunderstanding, I Really don’t have any critique for this comic tbh, you guys are a match made in heaven, excited to see more.
Delightful comic here, great references, good vibes. Ya’ll clearly have an understanding and an appreciation for comic paneling and layouts, which goes a long way, i especially love the negative-space orbital strike panel, thats just mint . The character poses are all so cute and dorky in a good way. Those great black and white pages near the end are very good, but I do think it could have benefitted from being a duotone, wouldn’t have taken away from your time economy much, but that’s hardy a quibble, overall this is delightful and I hope to see more of these wizards soon
Definitely an unexpected match up that worked so well once it was put to page! I love that you decided to have your team not be a team at all round 1 as we watch poor Myrtle do her best to make it happen. Krissy by contrast oozes cool, but is still able to be an amusing butt of the joke with the misspelling of her name. It was such a simple premise, but the visuals and interactions made what could've been a mundane convo something pretty dynamic.
I'm so curious to see how this team grows past round 1 and that mysterious mix tape. Intriguing work!
This was such a frenetic entry. Nothing says true wizard like the memes, the gags, the epic magical attacks. Its clear you had fun with this madcap interaction because it definitely shows. The story is a simple one ,but I don't think the comic suffers for it because it is more than made up for with the intensity of events that play out in that entertainment hungry chasm. I'm surprised this is your first comic here since you two seem so at home panel to panel I hardly knew where one artist began and the other ended!
I applaud bringing the goofs and laughter, nice work
WIZARD ROMANCE SLICE OF LIFE?? It's everything I need in my measly existence, inject this comic into my veins.............. anyway I love the super funky colors!! Everything is such a treat to look at, the expressions, the colors, the GLITTER? It's so impressive how every panel comes together to make the page a cohesive composition. Idk how to explain this but the visual style of this is so ... comics, it's lovely.
The writing is also just perfect and perfectly succinct... I adore the portrayal of coach + protein wizard. The skipping rope challenge is utter genius and that last panel is an absolute joy. And this review would be incomplete without mentioning the treasure trove of references to other oculama characters! Thank you for letting me look at this
Love the super polished graphical quality, it's so crazy good. The sparse colors really pop w/ the spot blacks, I'm so obsessed with the shape-focused art style you two have going here, it's so appealing!
I love the absurdist, zero explanation setup of the story, it just gets right into the shenanigans, and I cannot get enough of Coach and Protein Wizard. It seems like you set out to do a simple, silly, self-contained entertainment and overall day-improving, mood-lifting comic and if so, you absolutely blasted it out of the park! Every single panel in this comic is so funny and silly, it's utterly perfect. This matchup is sooo hard to pick from because everyone
here absolutely ROCKED it. WIZARD FRIENDSHIP!!
HOLY CRAP. *slaps the roof of the page landing* This bad boy can fit so many bangers in it. So much character in so little time! Using this first round as a set up for your characters to meet each other, while smoothly integrating the opponents in this encounter? Giving everyone awesome outfits? Wonderful!! Im so invested in Myrtle and Krissy Kross now... The color choices were on point, I sat for a good minute on pg 6, the rosy linework is so nice! Great use of establishing shots, I never felt like I was disoriented or confused on where the characters were. Looking forward to seeing more!!
yes....Yes....YES!!! Such wonderful colors! The touch on handwritten font works wonderfully, and really PUNCtuates the hits! For the characters to be put to the whims of a Great Wizard... wonderful. The action is clear and strong (again, WONDERFUL COLORS..... AH) and the story is short and succinct. Though the ending feels a bit abrupt, I think it's mostly the lack of Coach Wizard and Myrtle appearing at the end. I would've loved to see more sideline cheering from Coach Wizard and Krissy Kross! Other than that, awesome work!! A super cohesive comic, the collab of a lifetime!! So excited to see what else yall do!
oohhhh this is so precious!! I love how much detail and love you guys put into your pages and the setup means the bigwiz party continues! I like the premises of the story and first meetings are always super cool to see in comics! secondly I love protein and coach wizard in this they are a great pair to get great dialogue and humor from. worth noting i think is that I do love the short and sweetness of the comic no more no less was needed to show on this one even if I would have loved to see even more of these OCs as personal desire <3
hahahaaaa I loved this extremely funny delightful comic once I saw coach wizards gluts I knew I was in for a good read lol. I think overall the only thing I could say about this is just the spontaneous situation that spawns this encounter and who the big brain wizard is are both things that are just begging to be explained a little more, though that didnt stop me from enjoying this comic at all and how stellar seeing all these wizards dancing and chainspelling it out XD. I especially like the yamcha and jojo references god this was such a delight yall!
