The goal of an intro comic is to give a snapshot of a character and what their deal is about and this introduction does this in spades. We've seen Tio plenty in holiday comics, and I'm chuffed to see that the shenanigans they have gotten up to in the past year only enhance this introduction instead of renege it. Their earth ignorance and general tomfoolery isn't just terrestrial, its the stuff of intergalactic legend.
I'm such a sucker for sepia tones and good inks, so its great to see a black and white comic. Also is it just me or is your establishing panel a nod to Heavy Metal's Captain Sternn's Trial with Hanover Fiste? I half expected Tio to hulk out-but it was great to be surprised with a cheeky hologram stand in. I'm here for this level of Top brattiness. More please :D
Punchy and well-composed. Bearing in mind this is not the Tio's first appearance on Oculama, this is as good an introductory comic as one could hope to read for a character new on the Junction's burgeoning universe scene. Your scripting overall does a real heavy haul as well, laying out Tio's trickiness, independence, and puckishness with ease.
The art here is rock-solid. I love the composition of page one, especially the layout of Tio's offenses, which provides a huge share of the lift in establishing their personality. You've also got some great angles worked into two pages; a medley of mid- and far-range shots that includes some terrific low angles (the hologram two-paneler pulled a hard laugh out of me).
I love the alien designs, especially the head arbiter (never knew an axolotl could look so long-suffering~) I'm also a fan of your space station/spacecraft designs. Nothing overbearingly intricate, but it all feels of a universe, which is impressive in just two pages.
Awesome job on this intro comic, and look forward to more of of Tio in the new year!
I have been very excited about this intro comic ever since you mentioned it awhile ago. The disappointing part is how hard I had to wait for it lol but it was worth it. I've seen a bit of Tio from all the big collabs and laughed at all the shenanigans they had to endure, thanks to Selby. Getting an insight on how they arrived at Junction and a glimpse of their past made me appreciate them more. I like the humorous approach to the intro comic but I know there's a lot of storytelling potential hidden underneath with Tio being the last of their species. I personally am looking forward to seeing more of that.
At first I wasn't sure if I like the warm monochrome coloring for a space themed comic as I always associated space/futuristic with cold/bluish colors, but I am loving it more and more. It gives me a nostalgic vibe. With only two pages, you managed to give us an intro that feels complete but also enough to make me crave for more.
Really solid work. I don't know how I would improve it.
Tio having such a rap sheet is fun and surprising given how they've been presented in the past as a slightly uptight outsider.
And the twist that the council has been talking to a hologram is good stuff.
Your style is also solid, artwise.
I like how you draw both the space ship and the space station from the outside, and the bits detailing her prior mentioned rap sheet are quite funny.
first impression: ooough i can just feel the textures of the pages just looking at them. I quite like the variety in space denizens
The only panel i'd call weak is the space background on the middle-right of the first page. Are these meant to be space habitats or parked space houseboats?
That hardlight projector being present in the 1st page is also a nice touch.
Tio's overall theme and genre has a strong appeal to me so i may be biased. Excited to see Tio's past and future unfold!
Excellent looking inks on this comic. Very clean looking and it feels like a real step-up in quality lately. This is a great story as well - really enjoy how this establishes so much about Tio'Naia but doesn't give us everything. It's an excellent hook and while we've seen plenty of them so far in Holiday Comics and enjoying them there, knowing your capacity of larger and more grandiose stories demonstrates that this is a character to keep watch on in the future. Fantastic comic.
