Very funny, the meta-ness fits the characters elevated existence so it really feels like their retelling of the events. Art is well done too and I like the personality for both home field and away team, you can tell that they put a lot of thought into understanding each others characters.
It's definitely a tough act to follow. If anything I'd say the plot does weaken in face of the humour but that feels like an intentional choice so I find it hard to fault.
Incredible stuff, professional level quality comics I get to read for free? Creative use of the medium with animated pages too really step this up into a top tier read. Characterisation feels spot on, I love the use of all the characters abilities and their ways of applying their skills and powers.
The story is a little heavy, but as critique goes that's probably all I can even muster as a negative and even then I'm happy to sink my FANGS into it.
This was such a delightful read! You two are such an excellent team.
First off, this was a really lovely comic to look at, really nice saturated and bright colors that weren't overwhelming to look at, nice panel layouts, I really like how you used the scrolling page layout with the narrative, it was a good move. The text bubbles flowed really nicely.
I was also just really impressed with how you guys incorporated the animated elements. Those looked so nice without being distracting, they added a really nice touch.
Great work you guys! Fantastic entry!
Always a treat to read a comic from each of you, so you guys teaming up is just a delight.
Ya'll sense of humor is always on point, made me smile reading it. You guys had some really great gags in this one. The construct cone wizard helpers were a lot of fun.
I also thought the panel layouts were really nice, and everything flowed and read really easily.
My only critique is pretty minor, I feel a little bit more story could have happened between your characters and the opponents.
Otherwise, really fun read and I always look forward to comics from you both! Thank you for the comic!
I like the decision to make this round something of a "wizard arc" for your OCs. Obviously wizards would play a part, given your opponents, but you did a nice job making encountering them in the middle of space feel organic.
(Or as organic as sci-fi fantasy reality breaks can be ;) )
I also like the decision to use a news report as a framing device to bring the reader up to snuff. I really enjoy elements that make the junction-verse feel big and complete, and that goes a long way toward building that meatier world. Also the design for the newscaster was dope.
Your use of Big Wizard brings the apexes of the comic, in my estimation. The panel manipulation as a means of transportation in-universe is a great recurring bit that uses humor as a tool to escalate action quite effectively. The visual gags, like the high-five and the chuck into next week, bring laughs both sensible and audible. And by contrast, Raincoat is a very pleasant breath of low-tension air, who pairs nicely with mii'ke.
Solid work all-in-all. Thanks for sharing the awesome comic!
Up-front, I enjoy how you opted both to have Big Wizard and Raincoat involved with the comet in a non-wish-desiring capacity, AND gave them a compelling reason to be chasing it in potential future rounds.
I thoroughly enjoyed your depictions of Raven and Mii'ke. Their dynamic here of two weary, dysfunctional, and borderline abusive collaborators brings just enough tenseness to the overall sillier nature of the story, and in turn exacerbated the tenseness of the wizard OCs, appropriately and hilariously.
(Them getting offended at the hat and crystals remark was a delight).
The contrast with Big Wizard and Raincoat as cordial collaborators who do movie night together was quite nice as well.
The borderline non-sequitur ending works for me on a lot of fronts - for one, it comes after the comet plot proper has been put to bed, so it feels more like a bonus than a cut-off ending, two, it's such an extended and earnest defense of genre outliers that I can't help but find it endearing, and four, it does itself get interrupted by Nine Wizard bringing the discussion back to the comet in the most flippant yet consequential way possible.
Very funny, and very unexpected. Always a treat to see a Raincoat adventure, and excited to get Big Wizard content in a tournament.
I am blown away by your teamwork! This story had such a good twist and turn and I was so enthralled by it that I didn’t want to put it down. The coloring, especially in the backgrounds, was fantastic. Loved the usage of animated gifs to really sell the funkiness of the world they got teleported to, as well as the very cute style change. Overall this was a phenomenal story and I adored everything about it!
Nicely done you two! A pretty good story all around and it had me chuckling at some of the gags. I do have one thing though— I know that it was probably part of the joke, but the text heaviness of page 9 took me out of the story a bit. Maybe breaking the paragraphs up into more manageable chunks would have read better to me, even if it was supposed to sound like rambling.
Comedy comics are always a great read. This was a great combination with both of you working together. Ninja, you really translated a lot of GUN's sensibilities and jokes well and this was a great showing as a result. That being said, there's one main criticism - while your colors have a lot of nice texture to them, they're really lacking in depth or any kind of shade or sense of light. It's been said before on previous comics, but you really do end up with a lot of middle tones throughout the comic and it really kind of hurts the general appearance of the work on the whole. There's clear indicators of some subtle shadows, but you should try pushing them to be more distinctive because it'd help your work a lot. However, you had some unique angles attempted and even with translating GUN's goofy comic you did a great job with the expressiveness of the characters and really slammed it.
GUN, you do more right than wrong, so this is short. Your goof'ems and storytelling is a lot of fun as always. You may not have the competitive bug as before, but you really deliver quality in your own unique style of writing. Whenever you decide to come back and grace us with more of your work, it can't come soon enough.
You both worked great together and it'd be fantastic to see more from you both soon. Excellent work!
A terrific comic. This is the first battle Raven's been involved in to my knowledge, but it was really well done. You both do a great job of shoring up the other's art and making something that's really worth more than the sum of it's parts. The story handled your opponents expertly, even though it's not in your usual wheelhouse. It was both funny and it really did a great job furthering the story for these two.
Special mention must be made for the excellent animation work - that's become something of a favorite of yours, Pyras, but it's completely welcome and it really brought a very dreamlike quality to your opponent's realm. Excellent work avoiding the artifacting from the GIF limitations as well, that's pretty difficult to do. It'll be great to see what you both do next round, but for the time being, you really knocked it out of the park. This was a terrific comic and a great first showing. Excellent work!
A visual spectacle that was a delight to read! I loved the vibrant colors, the character's expressions, and the creative use of panelling (and lack of panels for the long vertical strip.) It was really cool to see you take advantage of the digital medium and do things you could never do in a traditional comic such as the one extra long page and all of the animated effects. The way the two different groups were weaved togather was really well done as well, cutting back and forth between them absoultely seamlessly. The implimentation of the wizards was also very fun, and I feel like their quirky personalities really shined, especially in contrast with the more serious Raven and Tio'Nia. I'm curious to see where the story heads if they have already made it to Jericho's location by the end of Round 1, and in general I'd like to see how your two characters end up developing. Will they stay as rivals, or will they end up becoming allies after all? It's a fun dynamic that contrasts from the other groups. Anyways, it's a fantastic comic!
I'm always a sucker for comedy comics, and the premise of the wizards themselves being the ones actually responsible for powering the comet is a fun one! The facial expressions are gold, I feel like so many of them would make for great reaction images/emotes. I especially love The Big Wizards face when the wizards are shocked by Tio'Nia's outburst. I did love the comedic bickering between Raven and Tio'Nia, though compared to their more serious portrayal and antagonism in their own comics, the dynamic does come across a bit out of character. It certainly matches the silly tone of the comic though! While I do enjoy the last panel talking about anime, the ending does feel a bit abrupt since the final punchline panel is so tiny in the page real-estate. Overall, a very fun read!
This felt like a love letter to wizardry. It's great to see the use of an omnipotent being like The Big Wizard in a way that feels loyal to the concept but enhances it in a manner we've never seen before. And SPEAKING OF what my eyeballs have seen! Holy animated pages batman! Nice to see y'all putting the site through its paces on what it can support and feature. I think my fav bit had to have been the shifting wizards garden once our situationship crash landed in there. Also giving a nod to the world building of the junction by featuring some of our friendly neighborhood other wizards. I think if I had any notes, it would be that while I understand you had QUITE a bit of information to upend into your readers eyeballs, buy the midpoint of the comic, the word bubbles seem to begin to overtake the rather choice art on display. I don't think any of it was unimportant, but there is something to be said of editing not only for time and space (hyuk hyuk), but as incentive to plug into your next round should you blast off towards it.
You two have worked together before, but I think this may be your first bonafied elimination tournament. Way to come in throwing haymakers XD
Wizard shenanigans abound! I have been looking forward to seeing how you were going to turn this tournament and reality up on its head and you two didn't disappoint. I think between the two teams, your efforts on being frugal with dialogue did you credit and afforded you to bank on making the final page a wall of text, which also served as a great punchline that brought your whole comic together. Making what these wizards love to tune into being a meta narrative of your opponents misadventures is the kind of big eye wink energy we've come to expect with The Big Wizard, and Raincoat continues to serve as that baseline voice of reason that looks out for the little guy. There's an ease in how you two worked together, and a practiced deftness with how you showcased your opponents to fit your style. Raven being a lovesick crybaby, and Tio being a tough talkin negotiator had me chuckling. I certainly hope you two collaborate again past this tournament, because you really have something here I'd like to see more of.
Okay this comic is so gosh dang HI TIER! the ANIMATED BACKGROUNDS!THE CRAZY ACTION AND MOVEMENT DOWN THE THE LENGTH OF JUST 1 PAGE! THE ABSOLUTE KNEE SLAPPER WITH BIG WIZ and the "be worried" joke was amazing all around! I had to go back to read up on the last comic you guys did and that same energy and momentum here was doubled! absolutely a master class in comic making! I cannot wait to see more! thank you so much for sharing this with all of use <3 I truly have nothing to say on this entry other than "Smokin Sexy Style"
NINJA AND GUN! yall are 100% diabolical as a pair lol. I couldn't tell which parts were broken up by the two of you which is a fantastic thing because you guys were so in sync with your trademark funnies(wizard grandma's ears should never have heard such evil" and you put such a good spin on tio's character and I really liked them lol playing up the tragic backstory for Raven made me laugh as well and nice usage raincoats ever extended cast of wizard buddies. nice touch keeping the omniscience and 4th wall breaking going for your team as well! great comic!
A recap page is quite appreciated since you did make a prequel comic for this tournament before said tournament even kicked off. Neatly splitting up your allotted pages and resulting stylistic differences twice with the alternate dimension makes transitioning between styles multiple times not be so jarring for the reader.
the use of .gifs throughout this is also interesting even if it's just simpler rotations, shakes, and squishes.
I do like me a silly magic chase scene as well.
A rather melodramatic approach. My favorite bits here were the fact that the comet needed a whole magic software update, and the sequence of the last page.
It does ooze with a degree of unseriousness which might not be to everyone's taste such as the fill-in dialogue at page 3 being longer than the actual event name but i can appreciate "forgot to finish the update 100%" as a good sequel hook for the next round.
